Description
Thick slices of bread soaked in a rich egg custard with sweet chocolate chips that melt into every bite. This warm, cozy breakfast delivers bakery-style chocolate chip French toast right from your kitchen with family-friendly appeal and irresistible chocolate flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 thick slices brioche, challah, or Texas toast
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup whole milk or half and half
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons butter for cooking
- Maple syrup and powdered sugar for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Whisk eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt in a shallow bowl until smooth.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt butter evenly across the surface.
- Dip each slice of bread into the custard for 15-20 seconds per side until soaked but not falling apart.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly onto one side of each soaked slice, gently pressing them into the bread.
- Place bread onto the heated skillet and cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
- Flip carefully and cook another 2-3 minutes until the center is set and chocolate chips are melted.
- Remove from heat and let rest briefly to allow custard to finish setting.
- Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit if desired.
Notes
Use slightly stale bread for best texture and avoid over-soaking to prevent sogginess. Cook over medium heat so the outside turns golden while the inside stays soft and filled with melted chocolate.
